Roberto Carlo with the "Impossible Goal"

France were due to host, and go on to win, the World Cup in 1998. This friendly tournament in 1997 saw the eventual 1998 finalists meet in a match that is now famous for this particular goal. Roberto Carlos defied physics by hitting the ball with the outside of his left foot and curling it inwards into the right hand corner of the net. It has since been dubbed ‘the impossible goal’. Nothing has ever been seen like it since and perhaps never will.
